‘무지개’같은 한국 사회 속에서 만난 할로할로

 

Korea is so much colorful today. Different skin colors, nationalities, languages, and even religions blend in the country that was shared high degree commonality in the past. You can meet African, South Asian, America, European, Latin American, and Arabian easily in every corner of Seoul today. Korean government promotes globalization eagerly, but most of citizen still could not embrace the meaning of difference. As consequences, atmosphere of hatred and negative prejudice is applying toward those who are differences from others. That is not because the society itself is hostile, instead lack of understanding, communication, and contact are the root of impediments of society coexistence.

 

오늘날 한국은 매우 다채롭습니다. 과거와는 달리 한국에는 다양한 피부색, 국적, 언어, 종교를 가진 사람들이 더불어 살고 있습니다. 오늘날 서울에서는 일상에서 쉽게 아프리카, 동남아시아, 미국, 유럽, 남아메리카, 아랍권 등에서 온 사람들을 만날 수 있습니다. 한국 정부는 열심히 세계화를 증진시키려 하지만 대부분의 시민들은 이러한 다양성을 잘 포용하고 있지 못하고 있습니다. 그 결과, 자신과 다른 사람을 증오하고 부정적인 편견을 가지는 분위기가 형성되었습니다. 이는 사회 자체가 적대적이라서가 아니라 다른 문화권 사람들에 대한 이해, 소통, 접촉이 부족하기 때문에 나타난 현상입니다.

 

It is not easy to live as person who is difference from others. I have slightly darker skin and my hijab (headscarf for Muslim women) always becomes center of attention. I fully aware that those eyes were not intend to hurt or insult me; they just curious but do not confident to ask, so do I who do not confident to explain. I have never had a moment to explain myself except to close friend, who am I, where do I come from, why I use weird thing on my head, and so on. Once, I took taxi from Myeongdong and the taxi driver talking bad about my religion. I become more eager to tell others about who I am, but I did not know how, where, and to whom until I found Halo-Halo program several months ago.

 

남들과 다른 사람으로 사는 것은 쉽지 않습니다. 저는 약간 어두운 색의 피부를 가지고 있고 제가 쓰고 있는 히잡(이슬람 종교의 여성들이 머리에 쓰는 스카프)은 항상 주목을 받습니다. 이러한 주목이 저에게 의도적으로 상처를 주려는 시선이 아닌 호기심이라는 것을 압니다. 사람들에게 저에 대해 설명할 자신이 없는 것처럼 사람들도 저에게 물어볼 자신이 없는 것이지요. 친한 친구들을 제외한 사람들에게 제가 어디서 왔고, 왜 히잡을 쓰는지 등에 대한 이야기를 들려준 적이 없습니다. 한번은 명동에서 택시를 탔는데 택시 기사가 제 종교에 대해 안 좋은 얘기를 했습니다. 그때 저는 다른 사람들에게 제 이야기 해주고 싶은 욕구가 더 강해졌습니다. 그러나 어디서, 어떻게, 누구에게 알려주어야 할 지 몰랐습니다. 몇 달 전 할로할로 프로그램을 만날 때까지는요.

 

           

 

The feeling is just incredible to have real contact with Korean who also wants to hear my story. Playing, laughing, and talking with Korean children in elementary school gave experience how warmth are they. They are enthusiastic to hear story of my country despite of my limited Korean language ability. Many of them mistakenly thought I am Indian, because Indonesia and India sound a bit similar in Korean language. They are also curious why I use hijab and very enthusiastic to eat Indonesian snack. The most memorable moment was when they were saying ‘thank you’ in Indonesian language in the end of class. I was so much touched of their sincerity and warm heart to me. In the end of class, I always say not to be afraid if they meet somebody looks like me and ask them to visit Indonesia in the future. Despite some lacks of this pilot project, I think the most important part is when we can create warm atmosphere between student and foreign teacher. I hope in near future, everybody will smile and celebrate ‘rainbow’ the differences in Korea. Thank you for this opportunity Halo-Halo. Maya Widiarini

 

제 이야기를 듣고 싶어하는 한국인과 직접 만나는 것은 말로 표현할 수 없이 황홀한 기분입니다. 초등학생들과 놀고, 웃고, 이야기하는 경험은 아이들이 얼마나 따뜻한 존재인지 느끼게 해주었습니다. 제 부족한 한국어 실력에도 불구하고 그 아이들은 제 나라에 대한 이야기를 매우 흥미로워 하며 듣고 싶어합니다. 인도네시아와 인도가 한국어로 발음이 비슷해서 많은 아이들이 저를 인도인으로 알았습니다. 아이들은 왜 제가 히잡을 쓰는지에 대해 매우 궁금해 했고 인도네시안 간식에 매우 흥미를 가졌습니다. 가장 기억에 남는 순간은 수업이 끝날 때 아이들이 ‘고맙습니다’를 인도네시아어로 말했을 때입니다. 아이들의 진심 어린 마음에 저는 감동을 받았습니다. 수업이 끝날 때쯤 저와 같이 생긴 사람들을 두려워하지 말 것을 항상 아이들에게 당부하고 나중에 기회가 되면 꼭 인도네시아에 가보라고 말합니다. 이 프로그램에도 보완할 점이 있지만 가장 중요한 것은 외국인 강사와 학생들 사이에 따뜻한 분위기를 형성할 수 있다는 것입니다. 미래에 모두가 웃으며 ‘무지개’와 같은 한국의 다양성을 기념할 수 있었으면 좋겠습니다. 할로할로 프로그램에 참여할 수 있는 기회를 주셔서 감사합니다.

Maya Widiarini(이하 마야)는 미지센터에서 운영하는 글로벌테마체험교육 인도네시아팀 외국인강사로 활동하고 있습니다.  한국인으로서 옆에서 지켜본 마야는 언제나 긍정적이고 주변사람을 유쾌하게 만들어주는 멋진 친구입니다. 개인적으로는 무슬림 여성이 조용하고 소극적일 것이라는 편견을 깨주는 친구이기도 합니다.
