Making the world warmer with scientific technology

Nowadays many people go abroad to help the poor living in developing countries. As we had received financial and technical help in reconstructing Korea in the past, it is quite familiar to us as to give developing countries national assistance. Volunteers including scientists, students have been to overseas to do volunteer work of scientific technique. To hear their stories, I went to ‘Conference on overseas volunteer work of scientific technique’ hosted by ‘Scientists and Engineers Without Borders (국경없는 과학기술자회)’. It was held on April 13th at Seoul National University faculty club.

Let me introduce Scientist and Engineers Without Borders!

This corporation was founded with the aim of making those lives better who are suffering from lack of science and technology by providing assistance to them. The Scientists and Engineers Without borders organization which consists of science or industrial experts has been trying to enhance their education standard and research and develop the nations’ scientific technology which would be available in their own countries since Dec 4th 2009. In wish to know this organization further, I interviewed with secretary Lee Kyung-sun.

The Scientists and Engineers Without borders which organized today conference was founded to provide scientific technology to developing countries. Could you specify exactly what kind of activities does this organization do?

Scientists and Engineers Without borders puts emphasis on ‘network’. In the efforts of encouraging members to do scientific and technological volunteer works in abroad and sharing those volunteer experiences with the general public as well as members of the organization, we have been strengthening domestic and foreign networks. Today’s conference would be a good example of it. Above of all we have researched and developed scientific technology regarding ‘Appropriate Technology’.

Appropriate Technology?

Appropriate Technology(적정기술) literally means appropriate science and technology. When we think of scientific technology, we usually image something difficult and hard. However, Appropriate Technology is a technology which is easy to use and apply anywhere around the world. For instance, we drink water cleared by water purifier. But those living in developing countries should go a long way to get water and carry it back to home. But even that we install a water purifier in that nation, could they use it? Water purifier is useless without electric power so people don’t get benefits from the machine. Appropriate Technology is the one which can be applied and used conveniently in these developing countries.

From this conference, what could teenagers learn?

I expect that their view looking the world would be enlarged. With understanding various cultures, students could strengthen the education that builds their characters. As they have done volunteer activities and made a speech in this conference, teenagers would improve self-esteem as they come to realize that they could be helpful in the society for themselves.

Then let’s go to see how the ‘Oversee Volunteer work of scientific technique conference’ was preceded.

'Overseas Volunteer Work of Scientific Technique Conference' program

The conference consisted of three main sessions.

Session 1- appropriate technology research and development and support.

Session 2- scientific technique volunteer work oversees and cultivate global engineers.

Session 3- develop appropriate technology from on-site experience.

In session1, there was a brief explanation about appropriate technology. And about how these techniques have been applied and developed in recent one year, programs and experiences in developing countries such as Indonesia, Cambodia and Philippines.

After short break time, session 2 started. Session 2 dealt with programs of cultivating global engineers and examples of volunteer works based on these programs.

One professor said that “I think it is meaningful and important to educate students to become great global engineers for the future.”

Among several speeches, I found educational volunteer activity at Kenya presented by a Yonsei university Wonju campus professor interesting. Two attendants of the team members said that even though the work was hard, the team members already had expected such difficulties as no supply of energy, a lot of insects. So those were not big deterrents to them. Also they advised to people who have an idea of volunteering abroad that it would be better to participate in volunteer works with resolute determination.

Last session regarded practical technologies which were already experimented in developing countries. In this session many university students made speeches based on their real experiences.

They planned project, made inventions using appropriate technology and went abroad to set these up. After some period, they sometimes go to the place to check those products’ practicality for further improvements. All these works had been done largely by themselves with the support of universities. Sometimes companies organize these kinds of activities. As an instance, I met several members from Hyosung Blue Challenger before their speech.

Hyosung Blue Challenger (효성 블루챌린저) is a volunteer group of university students supported by cooperation Hyosung.

How and why participated in this conference?

Our professor at Hyosung Blue challenger holds office at SEWB (Scientists and Engineers Without Borders). And he suggested participating this conference to us.

What did you learn?

We have learned a lot by experiencing firsthand. The most essential thing for developing countries is technology and education. As we have realized the importance of ‘teaching them how to catch fish not just giving them caught fish’.

It is also significant to understand and commute with local culture when volunteer abroad.

As an instance, Vietnamese usually nap from 12 pm to 2 pm. Without knowing it, we entered a house to install 'blue stove'(blue challenger's invention) and got embarrassed when we met drunken men.

Through this accident, we came to learn by heart that before providing them with technology, we should respect their lifestyle in advance.

It seems that we should study very hard about science for scientific volunteer.

No, not as such. The technology we provide for developing countries is comprised of basic principles, not very difficult one. In other words, we put stress on making the invention as simple as possible so that residents could use it conveniently. Of course scientific technology and specialized knowledge is important but I think the interest about what would be necessary to them who struggle in these areas matters more.

At this conference, I met and saw many people who struggle to provide developing countries with scientific technology and education around the globe. Those people have been working hard in the pure aim of helping those who suffer from lack of technology which must have been difficult. With the common aim of improving poor countries’ lives better by developing and inventing appropriate technology, volunteers including scientists, technologists, professors and students came together in the conference. They shared their experiences, presented their inventions and sought better ways vigorously.

Seeing not only those people but also the Scientists and Engineers Without Borders, I anticipated in the future the more this kind of people volunteer, the happier the world would be.

Appropriate technology is an ideological movement originally articulated as "intermediate technology". It is generally recognized as encompassing technological choice and application that is small-scale, labor-intensive, energy-efficient, environmentally sound, and locally controlled. Well-known examples of appropriate technology applications include: bike- and hand-powered water pumps, self-contained solar-powered light bulbs and streetlights and passive solar building designs. Today appropriate technology is often developed using open source principles, which have led to open-source appropriate technology (OSAT) and thus many of the plans of the technology can be freely found on the Internet.

How’s your school life?
What is different between Korean school and that of international?

“How’s your school life at international school?” was one of the most common questions I’ve got since I came to oversees, China. In responding to them, I noticed that a number of students are quite interested to know international schools of which friends from various countries and foreign teachers consist. And I thought it would be good to introduce regarding how it is different between international schools and Korean schools to global students not only Koreans.

According to the data collected from Korean students who, at present, attend international schools, I will introduce the top 3 respectively. The question was ‘what is the most impressive part you have gotten while attending international school?’ 79 students responded in total and diagram below represents the result visually.

Best1. Meals

▲School lunch가나다라마바사아자차카타파하아야어여오요우유students often bring their own lunch box

Meals at international schools are often a bit more costly than those of Korean schools. But students can enjoy variety of dishes such as Korean, Italian. Also it is like a course at a restaurant in that there’s salad bar like appetizer, main dish and dessert. Drinks and fruits are also prepared. More often than not, the country where the schools are located has an effect on the meals.
For an instance, the school in which I went was in Tianjin, China and rice was served in every time.
But it is absolutely free and common to bring personal food for lunch such as cup noodles, sandwiches.
Quite a lot of Asian students bring their own meals made at home.

Forks and knives which are equipped in the cafeteria represent widespread use of western style.

Generally the atmosphere is more flexible than that of Korea, which I felt too. Although Koreans usually go to cafeteria along class lines, people in international schools act personally. Those of who have activities have lunch late, some who have not finished their homework skip their meals.

Best2. The number of students

There are not many chairs in class

To tell you the truth, I was quite astonished to know that in each class the number of pupils is less than 20.
In contrary to 30 to 40 students in one class
in Korea, international schools distribute their students in small groups. Moreover, each subject class has far less pupils even less than 10.

It is due in part to the curriculum in which students, as they get old, they can choose which subject they will take.

I consider this curriculum is considerably effective not only for students but also for teachers since teachers can give more attention to one by one which in turn is able to enhance every student’s learning ability. So I asked this topic to a teacher who is working at international school as a teacher of Korean.

Mrs. Kim Sunhee at Tianjin Rego Internatiaonl School.

How many years have you worked at Korean school and that of international?

Mrs. Kim: I had worked at Korean middle school roughly for 7 years and it has been 2 years working in Tianjin, China.

When we compare the number of students, international schools are inclined to have far less pupils. Also this school tends to be like. How do you think about this matter?

Kim: if I take this school as an example, the proportion of students per teacher responsible for them is 1:7~12 which makes a big gap with Korean school’s 1:35~40.

What advantages and disadvantages does it have?

Kim: for teachers, they can understand each student’s disposition in a better way so they are able to teach students depending on their characters. Not to mention, instructors give much more attention to individual and it makes them feel satisfied. Also in response to teachers’ affection, students try to concentrate their focus in class. As there are few people, students can get more various and free classes such as having a heated discussion with teacher, utilizing media in a creative way.

In my view, there’s not much disadvantage to mention.

Best3. Teaching style/ atmosphere in class

It seems that this point has somewhat overlapped with the previous one. Since there are far less students in a class, creative, active classes are possible in some part I think. However, having not so many people would be a pivotal part of international schools’ curriculum rather. As they realize the number of students in a class has much effect on the ambience within a class, they may have adopted this condition.

When it comes to education condition, international school students are able to get much free. After becoming Year 10 (or year 9 in American one), pupils acquire a kind of qualification of choosing which subjects they want to take. According to their own time table, they go around for a specific classroom or have free class for personal study. By doing so, students feel a sort of responsibility with their behavior.

As a mentioned a bit previously, classes are organized in a very free manner. They can have a sincere discussion regarding a specific topic with teachers, make a world map in geography class which for me was a very surprising matter as in Korea this kind of thing is rarely done by secondary or make a drama. Breaking away from only textbook study, learning in international school is more serious as well as interesting. Therefore, students from their youth are able to get deep knowledge in their specific area which is going to be their major in university.

From my own experience, this teaching style broadened my somewhat parochial thinking and helped me to develop self-thinking ability. And I am sure that those changes will be pretty beneficial in my life.

One more thing, maybe you have already known is that speaking English in school. Not to mention, people can increase their English in a glad way.

  Sports facilities

Apart from those things, students surveyed said quality facilities are impressive such as sports instruments and swimming pools and that assembly which is held once or twice a week is organized by students themselves is interesting. Moreover, there are various parties held on Special day like Christmas party, graduation party.

It’s true that international school holds various kinds of activities when it comes to comparing with that of Korean. But when I meditated this matter, I could reach a point that the ‘difference’ is because each school has ‘different’ educational direction. While international school tends to set school programs in regard to getting jobs, Korean, in fact including Asian schools, focuses on entering universities which would be handed the baton and seriously prepare students to get jobs. It means Korean schools have roles of preparing the ground for students’ future.
Therefore, with this article, I don’t mean just unfairly to advocate international school programs.

This story’s purpose is to introduce how Korean students have felt between Korean school and that of international.

Individual has its own merits. Korean school has its own merits as well as that of oversees.
I hope schools all around the globe would share their positive ways of teaching students or organizing schools in pure wishing to provide better education to our hopes.

Korea’s own department store opened in Tianjin!

"How magnificent it is! Korea is wonderful!"

After got out of taxi, I and my friend soon realized that we were facing a grand building in front of us. It was LOTTE department chain store in Tianjin which was far more distinct than other normal Chinese department stores for its splendid appearance.

Feeling a kind of nostalgia for its Korean looks, we entered the store. As it was a week before Chinese holiday quite a lot of people were roving around which in turn made a lively atmosphere. And when we saw a variety of products displayed in a very luxurious shop window and mannequins display clothing in the center of first floor, we thought we were in Korea for a moment as it was a sight which was hardly seen around in Tianjin.

A Korean department!

Tianjin LOTTE department is a store founded with full Korean capital and it opened on June 2011. Since it is considerably rare that Korean brands invest and build their own shops in oversees independently, this store attracted many people’s attentions after the news released stating that Korean brand LOTTE was planning to start a store in Tianjin with investing 100% Korean capital.

Since its opening in June last year, Tianjin store has achieved several successful results. When I asked to the general manager of Tianjin branch of LOTTE about distinct differences that this store has tried to emphasize, he said various kinds of marketing and meticulous service would be leading ones.

Soon I became wondered how indigenous people think about it. So I directly went there and was able to meet many Chinese and some Koreans as well.

An army sergeant who was on leave gave me a satisfied smile and said overall ambience was so nice and clean in response to my question which was ‘which point do you think LOTTE has their own distinct in compare to other authentic Chinese department stores?’

As I asked the question to a teenage boy, the boy exclaimed that this store was so magnificent. To be specific, he said not only there were lots of high quality products but also service was great.

"Korea is wonderful!" The boy thankfully praised Korea and made my shoulder a bit mighty.

In fact, the store opened with the target of offering distinguishing service and good products, said the general director of Tianjin LOTTE.

Most customers liked its pleasant atmosphere and sophisticating design. Especially many people showed great pleasure to the rest areas distributed in various quarters in the market.

▲Rest areas around the Tianjin LOTTE (Tianjin LOTTE provided)

According to the interview with the manager, many rest areas here and there are only a part among a number of kinds of services it provides which can hardly find in other markets in China.
Some of them are bowing deeply at the waist, MVG rounge service for best customers, shuttle buses and cultural activities. Also as I mentioned above, it has its own special marketing to appeal customers.

In the interview, he explained they have adapted some good Korean productions in regard of indigenous conditions.

For instance, there are ice cream shape DM (direct mail) for children, flyers which can be seen with 3D glasses etc. Those have given a kind of refreshing jolt to Tianjin people and Tianjin LOTTE intends to keep trying many new things by sharing ideas with Korean head office.
In addition to them, new brands in Tianjin have launched in Tianjin branch which all together have shaped it to become a distinguishing department store as this kind of market has been unprecedented in Tianjin.

Also I asked visitors one more question.

It was ‘did you know that LOTTE in Tianjin was owned by Korean or the brand is Korean’s? And can you feel any Korean ambience around here?’

1 out of 2 people replied that they knew LOTTE was a Korean.

A Chinese middle aged woman said that she thought either Korea or Hong Kong. In response to my second question, she replied a discount market furnished every floor is barely seen in Chinese ones so it can be Korean style. (picture below)

▲discount market which is common in Korea but not in China

Three Chinese undergraduates claimed many Korean brand products represent it as a Korean market.

▲Korean goods (clockwise/ galaxy tap, Korean traditional things, Basic House, Tonymoly)

Yet, in contrary to my expectation that there would be a few emphasises as a Korean own market, the general director stated that it does not much try to put stress on being a Korean store.
To become a global market, it advocates 'global standard' instead of persisting Korean style, he explained.

What significance does it have?

LOTTE department of Tianjin showed a possibility that Korean market can also be successful for itself in oversees including China.
Furthermore, it would be a good precedent of how to put Korean markets themselves into global marketplace.

However, the manager of Tianjin branch said that he thought it hasn’t reached a stage which can call this a ‘success’. Instead he claimed that they are focusing on strengthening the basics and it would be an important point when it comes to running business in China.

With heavy responsibility as a first and sole Korean independent market opened in China, they are trying to provide better service, better environment for customers at all times.

In response to my question why was it China, he stated that for China’s marketability and potential power many companies enter to China including them.

Youth are the leading role in the global market

"I think domestic market has reached saturation. At present a lot of students not only study foreign languages, but also go study abroad. Like this, quite large part of employees in our company is proficient in foreign languages. It represents in part that being global has been a requisite for each country's growth.
Or perhaps it is no overstatement to say that the border concerning economy had been eliminated already long time ago. Therefore you, youth, are so much precious asset in our country as you are the leading role in the global market.

Although it is important to study on the desk, I think it is significant to know global history and culture as well. Not merely ‘studying’ language, but learning them with interest would be far more effective. Even if it would be seemed as only theoretical advice, being faithfully prepares for your future with regarding the globe and reading many books will be a great property for you all."

After the interviews with the manager and customers, I felt very proud of my country, Korea. I hope more and more Korean brands would bravely go into the abroad market and thus introduce the excellence of Korea to the whole world.
